The team at US Photonics was asked by the good people at Micro Manufacturing magazine to use our femtosecond laser to engrave the word "LASERS" into the head of a match for use on their Fall 2009 cover (pictured above). This demonstrates the lack of heat transfer from the femtosecond pulse, which makes it possible to ablate combustible materials and even high explosives.
